Michelle was the youngest biological child of her parents who, besides her and her two brothers, brought up twelve foster children over a period of twelve years. She was raised Catholic, and attended East Buchanan High School, where during her schooling she acted in several school plays as she exposed an interest in acting from an early age. After finishing high school, she moved to Chicago to enroll at Columbia College where she studied journalism. During her studies, she started modeling throughout the US, as well as Europe and Asia. Michelle left college in her final year of studies in order to pursue an acting career full time, moving to New York where she first appeared in several magazines and catalogs as a model, before managing to make her acting debut.
Michelle’s first notable appearances were in episodes of the TV series “Young Americans” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 2001, however, her big screen debut came later that year when she portrayed the role of Henrietta in “Perfume”, but hers true big-break came in 2002 with the role of Kimberly Woods in the TV series “Boston Public” – Monaghan stayed on the show for one season, and then returned to films to appear in “It Runs in the Family”(2003), “Winter Solstice”(2004) and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”(2005) in which she starred with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. She also appeared in “Constantine” in 2005, but her role in the film was eventually cut. Two years later, Monaghan went on to co-star with Ben Stiller in “The Heartbreak Kid”, and then with Casey Affleck in “Gone Baby Gone”. Her other notable roles include those in “Made of Honor”(2008), “Eagle Eye”(2008), “Trucker” – in which she played alongside Jake Gyllenhaal – and the critically acclaimed HBO series “True Detective”. It was announced in April 2016 that Michelle had joined the cast of “Sidney Hall”, an independent feature film which began filming later the same year and is set to premiere in early2017 at the Sundance Film Festival.
When it comes to her private life, Monaghan has been married to graphic artist Peter White since August 2005, and they have two children; the family currently resides in New York. In 2011, Michelle a mole on her calf removed which had been diagnosed as skin cancer.
