Virginia Cavaliers were the top-seeded ACC team in NCAA Tournament 2023. Virginia played their first game on March 16 against the Paladins.
They had initially lost 3 games in the final three weeks of the regular season but had come out as the highest-seeded team in the tournament.
The Cavaliers made their 25th NCAA appearance in program history with their entry this season. Meanwhile, it was the ninth entry in the last 11 seasons under head coach Tony Bennett.
Virginia first captured their national title in 2019 but has received seven No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. They are the only ACC program to have earned No. 1 seeds in all four regions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Hence, the Cavaliers have seen brighter days in their basketball team under their athletics director Carla Williams. Carla is the first African American woman to hold the position at any power conference university.
During the recent season, Virginia forward Jayden Gardner reached the 2,000 career point milestone along with a long list of fellow players.
Duke Blue Devils (5-seed)
Duke Blue Devils are another ACC Teams in March Madness. Duke got an automatic bid to the tournament as the 2023 conference champion.
Their 59-49 score against the Cavaliers in the Finals made them land as the No. 5 seed in the East region. Duke played their first game of the tournament on March 16 against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles.
The 2022-23 NCAA season marked their ninth appearance in a row. Before being the 2023 ACC champions, the Blue Devils had lifted the trophy back in 1960, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1978, 1980, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1999-2003, 2005, 2006, 2009-2011, 2017, and 2019.
The Blue Devils are also the fourth team to have the most number of wins of all time at 5 in the NCAA men's basketball program. They share this record in a tie-breaker with Indiana and UConn.
Jon Scheyer currently coaches the Duke roster. Besides being among the most successful teams in college basketball history, Duke boasts an NCAA-best tournament-winning percentage of .755.
Similarly, eleven Devils have been named the National Player of the Year so far followed by 71 players who have been drafted in the NBA draft.
Miami Hurricanes (5-seed)
When the 2023 March Madness reached the Sweet 16, the fifth-seeded Miami Hurricanes were the only ACC Teams left in NCAA tournament.
Miami and Virginia had tied for the ACC regular-season crown, but the Cavaliers reached the championship game of the ACC tournament.
Hence, the Cavaliers took the No. 4 seed, higher than the Hurricanes. Coached by Jim Larrañaga, Miami has progressed in recent years though they only grabbed the conference title once in 2013.
So far, the Hurricanes have reached the Sweet 16 five times in 1999–2000, 2012–13, 2015-16, 2021-22, and 2022-23. Meanwhile, they have only appeared twice at the Elite Eight in the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons.
The 2022-23 season also saw Miami making an entry at the Final Four tournament. As the No.5 seed, Miami faced the No. 12 seed Drake Bulldogs in their first match.
Regarding the Canes' historical significance, the University of Miami men's basketball team was formed in 1926. However, the program was later dropped by the university in 1971.
The Hurricanes then resumed playing as an independent team in 1985 and later joined the Big East Conference in 1991. They won their former conference title in 2000. As of 2004, the team has been a part of ACC, following the management system of other Canes teams.
NC State Wolfpack (11-seed)
Head coach Kevin Keatts led NC State Wolfpack from the South in the 2022-23 season. Keatts has been in the position since March 2017.
Wolfpack first faced off with the Creighton Blue Jays on March 18 but lost to them by 72-63. Their recent NCAA tournament came after four years since 2018. As they had lost three of their four games in the conference, the Wolfpacks got their NCAA bid at these large seeds.
During their time at the national season, guard Jarkel Joiner joined the Cavaliers' forward Jayden Gardner and Texas guard Marcus Carr along with many others, to reach the record of a 2,000 career point milestone in their career.
Likewise, N.C. State University is one of the seven founding members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The university was established in 1887; hence, they were initially a member of the Southern Conference.
They had won seven SoCon championships before moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference. As a part of ACC, the basketball Wolfpacks have bagged ten conference championships and two national championships.
Meanwhile, NC State Wolfpack have made 28 appearances at the NCAA tournaments, including their recent one in 2023.
Pittsburgh Panthers (11-seed)
Pittsburgh Panthers joined the list of ACC teams in NCAA Tournament 2023. The Panthers made their 27th appearance in the tournament.
Guard Jamarius Burton and forward Blake Hinson were the main players who starred on the big stage under the tutelage of coach Jeff Capel.
Pittsburgh was set against Mississippi State Bulldogs and they won by a close margin of 60-59. This year marked the first major appearance of the Panthers since the Big Dance in 2016.
Meanwhile, the Pitts only joined Athletic Coast Conference during the 2013-14 basketball season. While the uni started its basketball program in 1905-06, its first conference was the Eastern Eight Conference, of which they were a part from 1976 to 1982.
As of today, Pittsburgh has reached one Final Four and received 15 First Team All-American selections. Meanwhile, they have recorded 1,674 victories and 1,232 losses since the 1905–06 season.
